  •  Treatment:
  • Title: Behind the Scenes: The Man of STEEL
  • Genre: Mockumentary/Parody
  • Target Audience: 18-49 year olds, Superhero fans
  • Outline: A behind the scenes look at the first few days on set of the brand new Superman movie in which unknown actor, Clint Fleetwood takes on the role of the man of steel.
  • Characters: There are very few characters in this short sketch and they include:
  • ·         Clint Fleetwood/Superman-
  • ·         James
  • ·         Tom
  • Clint Fleetwood:  Clint Fleetwood is a fairly unknown actor who has been given his first big break in Hollywood and many in the media and in Hollywood itself are eager to see Clint’s potential. However there is one problem, Clint is a horrible person, he is already the self-proclaimed “best actor in Hollywood” and is fully believes his own hype. Clint takes on a David Brent/Michael Scott role in terms of how he wants to be the centre of attention and has no common sense of what is PC or not.  He has a serious hatred for Henry Cavil and Zack Snyder and starts to believe that he is actually Superman
  • Tom- Tom is one of the co-directors of the film. Despite his lack of experience Justin was hired because of his love and knowledge of the character and the comics which DC needed to bring new life into a classic character. Justin is also young and felt that could help make the character of Clark Kent/Superman relate to general audiences
  • James: Tom is the other co-director of the film. He is slightly older than Tom but is still also working on his first Hollywood film. He had previously worked with Clint Fleetwood back on his first ever project and suggested bringing him aboard however they quickly regret that decision once he sees Clint is not the young man he once was.
  • Visual Elements:
  • Lighting:  The lighting will vary, some parts of sketch will be filmed on a working set and I want the final piece to reflect that because I want to look like an actual set with properly professional lighting. However some parts of the sketch such as cutaways and interviews will not be filmed in the studio and will use the realistic lighting that reflects the low budget of the documentary and will also use sun light for scenes shot outside and in Kings Lynn
  • Cinematography: : I am going to being using handheld camera in order to get that authentic documentary feeling and to allow for the camera to pan around the room easily and capture moments and reactions and we may not have gotten if the camera was stationary on a tripod.
  • Setting: I want to shoot in two places the studio at the college and on location around Kings Lynn. I would like to use the studio at the college because it can be used to give the impression that it will be a movie set. This will be the main location of sketch. I am hoping to go into Kings Lynn and get some shots for cutaways. I will be hoping to get permission from CEX/ HMV to film inside their store.
  • Props and costumes:  Props are going to be limited due a small budget and the fact that there isn’t really a need for props. I will be buying a copy of justice league on DVD which will be used for a gag, as well as a “copy” of the films script and a fake moustache.
  • In terms of costumes, I will be wearing a superman costume, which will be bad quality to make a joke about being able to make the suit better using CGI. Aside from that nobody else will have to be in a specific costume.
  • Audio Elements:
  • Soundtrack and Music: Currently, I am not planning on using any music in the project. Any music that may be used must be diegetic. I want the “documentary” to feel as authentic as possible meaning that no external music can be played unless it’s actually being played on set
  • Foley: Currently I am unsure on what Foley I may have to use, but I am defiantly planning on using some Foley.
  • Rationale:  This is a unique project that I feel will bring something different to the table. It plays on the superhero genre that has become very popular over the last 20 years, mainly down to the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and films like Spider-Man and the X-Men turning the genre on its head at the start of the decade.  Nobody else is doing a project like this so it will be very unique.
  • Primary and Secondary Research: I have conducted a survey in order to understand my demographic to aim my show at.  And I am also researching into shows such as The Office, Parks and Recreation and The Muppets among other mockumentaries in order to understand troupes, conventions and codes of a documentary in order to make mine as professional as it possibly can be
  • Resources and Requirements: I will require a camera operator and mic packs.
  • Constraints: The biggest constraint is obviously Covid19, which haled production on this project last year but has also set us back this year with restrictions. I will now have to make sure all characters are socially distanced are there are no characters that come into contact with one and other.
  • Legal and Ethical Considerations:  I don’t really have any ethical or legal concerns. Although Superman is a licensed character who is owned by DC, I do not intend to make money from this project so there should be no legal issues

Script

Behind the scenes: The man of steel

By

Conor Blake

FAde In:

We open with a talking head with actor Clint Fleetwood, a young American actor who has been cast as Superman in the new film The Man of Steel. He is speaking to the behind the scenes crew for the first time

CLINT (TALKING HEAD)

Do I think I can do the character justice? Absolutely, you know I’ve loved the character ever since I was a kid and I feel I can take inspiration from all the previous actors. Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were all brilliant in the role and I hope I can add to Spiderman’s legac- what? Oh I’m Superman?! Yeah scratch everything I’ve just said.

Title card: Behind the scenes: The Man of steel

Tom (talking heads)

TOM

My name Tom Cranston I am the director of the film, this is my first big Hollywood film.  I love the character, and we feel that a character as iconic as Superman deserves to have that success over characters have had over the years.

TOM cont.

We wanted a Clark Kent that audiences could relate too, and we feel we have found that

Clint Fleetwood talking head

CLINT

My name is Clint Fleetwood, I’m 18 years young. And I am the new... (checks piece of paper) Superman

CLINT CONT. (CUTAWAYS OF CLINT ON HIS FIRST DAY)

(Improvised)talking about himself and how great he is.

CLINT CONT.

You know I am a true professional, every role I take every role incredibly seriously. And I don’t mean to brag, but I got in great shape for the role...

Tom (talking head)

TOM

Yeah, no he’s not. He sent us this picture (zoom in on photo) and we did some photoshopped onto John Krasinski’s body... didn’t even try

Clint

Well I was going to but… (cutaways of Clint eating) I didn’t want to.

We then see a shot of Clint about to walk into the bathroom

Clint

I’m about to try on my costume for the first time, pretty excitin- nope no, not going in there, that’s disgusting

Clint walks into the room next door.

We then have shot of Tom in the studio, production s close to beginning, we see Tom on the phone, Clint bursts through the door

Clint:

Hey! What the f%&k is this?

We spin round to find Clint standing at the door wearing a cheaply made Superman costume

Clint cont.

What is this? Huh? What happened to the one you showed you me?

tom

Tom goes to answer him but Clint cuts him off

Clint

Listen, I don’t care what the excuses are alright, just fix it, I don’t care how, fix it with CGI or something make it green or whatever. I’m not being seen in this okay

tom

Right... okay? First of many questions… why are you wearing trainers?

clint

That’s one of my many changes to character design in the new script.

tom

Oh ok, wait what new script?

Clint

This…

Clint hands Tom a brand-new script

tom (completley baffled)

The Fleetwood Cut??

Clint

Yeah, it basically gets rid of every joke, every gay and replaces it with more gritty, dark scenarios with more violence, swearing and sex

Tom (even more confused)

Wait wha-?

Clint

Oh, and speaking of sex, you’re going to need to cast a new female lead, I fired the last one because she wasn’t attractive enough, I’m sure you can handle it

Clint walks off

Tom

You had no right to do that Clint

clint

Don’t care I’m the lead

Clint walks out the door, the camera pans back round to Tom who furious

Tom talking head, Tom just sights and shakes his head saying nothing

We then see a shot of CEX where Clint is seen walking into the store

Clint talking head

Clint

When making a movie, the most important thing above all else is marketing, getting the word out to the public early is so important. And that means slagging off the previous actors and films to let him know who’s in charge now…

Cutaways in Kings Lynn of Clint slagging off Henry Cavil, Zach Snyder ends with Clint throwing a copy of Justice league in a river.

Clint talking head:

Improvised talking head about how he is going to be superman for years to come and how he’s going to be the greatest superman actor ever, how he is going to become great friends with everyone etc. Then gets a phone notification that he’s been fired.
